DIABETES – HOW TO CONTROL THE DISEASE

What is Diabetes?

The disease of diabetes is a condition in which a person’s blood glucose level is too high. The body’s capability to process blood sugar is damaged when a person becomes diagnosed with diabetes disease. Since a hormone called insulin helps glucose extracted from the food intake get into the cells to provide energy to a person. But when in diabetes, the human body doesn’t produce enough insulin to get the glucose to the cells, therefore, the glucose stays in the blood.

What Are The Types Of Diabetes?

Following are the types of diabetes:

  • TYPE 1 DIABETES

In Type 1 Diabetes, the cells responsible to produce insulin in the pancreas are attacked by the immune system. People diagnosed with this type of diabetes are usually children and young adults. Also, people with type 1 diabetes are insulin-dependent which means artificial insulin intake is necessary in order to stay alive.

  • TYPE 2 DIABETES

In Type 2 Diabetes, the body does not produce insulin but not enough, and so, the body cells do not respond as efficiently as they should. Type 2 Diabetes is the most common type of diabetes and can occur usually in middle-aged and old age people.

  • GESTATIONAL DIABETES

Gestational Diabetes occurs in women when they are pregnant as the body becomes less sensitive to insulin. This type of diabetes usually goes away once the birth is given to the baby.

What Are The Symptoms Of The Diabetes Disease?

The symptoms of diabetes disease depend upon the elevation of your blood sugar. As compared to type 2 diabetes, the symptoms for people with type 1 diabetes tend to show up at the initial and could be more severe.
The general symptoms for type 1 and type 2 diabetes are:

  • Extreme hunger and thirst
  • Weight loss
  • Frequent urination
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow healing sores
  • Lethargic/ tiredness

Moreover, gestational diabetes doesn’t have any specific symptoms. But between the 24th and 48th week of pregnancy, the condition can be detected.

How Can You Control Diabetes?

Following are a few ways to control diabetes:
EAT HEALTHY: Eat foods lower in fat and higher in fiber content. Add fruits, vegetables, and grains to your daily meal.
EXERCISE: Exercise for almost half an hour a day. Indulge in aerobic exercises like walking, cycling, and swimming.
LOSE EXCESS FAT: Consider losing 7 percent of your total body weight if you’re overweight or obese.

BLOOD GLUCOSE TEST

Glucose testing is mainly done for individuals diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes. A glucose test basically measures the glucose content in the blood. After being diagnosed with any type of diabetes, a person needs to get a blood glucose test in order to conclude if the condition is well managed. If you detect any of the above symptoms, we recommend you to conduct test against the diabetes disease from the Health Commission Recognized Awami Lab Gujrat.
