Your liver functions a lot to make your body work properly. From producing protein and cleaning the blood to breaking down the food, your liver helps in the processing of these functions. To evaluate the health and condition of the liver, blood tests known as liver function tests (LFTs) are carried out. Hepatic panel, liver chemistries, or liver panel all of these terms are referred to liver function tests (LFTs). The liver functions test helps in determining the levels of proteins and enzymes in your blood. Monitoring of liver disease/ damage, infection, or chronic liver inflammation can be diagnosed by liver function tests. In order to check your liver irregularity, these specific blood tests are done:
- Alanine Transaminase (ALT)
- Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST)
- Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF LIVER DISORDER?
The symptoms of liver disease can be seen as:
- Jaundice (when skin and eyes turn to yellowish)
- Urine that is dark in color
- Light-colored stool
- Fatigue (energy loss) or weight loss
- Ascites (collection of fluids in the abdomen) or abdomen pain.
ALANINE TRANSAMINASE (ALT)
Alanine transaminase is an enzyme, generally known as serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase, or SGPT. The transaminase enzyme is basically formed in the liver, usually, there are low levels of ALT in your blood. The function of breaking down the food into energy is done by ALT and a small quantity of ALT enzyme is observed to be found in the kidney and other organs of your body too. The problems begin when the level of ALT seems to be increased in your blood, it indicates that your liver has some serious damaged.
It is a blood test that is used to diagnose the condition of the liver. Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme found in the bloodstream, it is responsible for producing a fluid known as bile that helps in the food digestion. Other than that is helps in the removal of toxins and waste products from your body. AST is capable of producing proteins. SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase) is another name that is used for AST. Normally the levels of AST are low, but if the level rises it causes liver damage.
ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE (ALP)
It is an enzyme that is found in your whole body and organs, from the liver to bones. If any of the symptoms of liver failure are observed by your doctor, then ALP is a must to be done in order the measure the level of alkaline phosphatase in your body. Doctors usually carry out the ALP test to check the blocked bile duct. If the amount of ALP is higher, then it is an indication of liver disease.
The liver produces a protein known as Albumin. The Albumin test is done to investigate the level of albumin in your bloodstream. Albumin has a tendency to keep fluids in our blood and keeps away the leakage of fluids into the tissues. It is a part of LFT’s and albumin test is important to be performed in order to have knowledge about the health of the liver.
