WHAT IS A TSH TEST?
A TSH test is used to measure the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone in the bloodstream. A small butterfly-shaped gland located near the throat is called Thyroid. A pituitary gland is a small pea-sized gland that is located underneath your brain and it is responsible for the production and releasing of thyroid-stimulating hormone in your bloodstream. The working and functioning conditions of the thyroid gland are checked through a TSH test. A TSH test informs about the hyperactive and underactive conditions of the hormones and also diagnose the disorders of the thyroid gland.
WHEN A TSH TEST IS CONDUCTED?
A TSH test is conducted if the symptoms of conditions like hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism show up. The normal range of TSH level is between 0.4 and 4.0 milli-units per liter (mU/L), so if the levels are higher than the normal you may have an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism). If the levels are lower then the normal range then it is possible that you may have an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). The symptoms of an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) are as follows.
- Anxiety or depression.
- Loss of weight.
- Tremors in the hands.
- High heart rate.
- Bulging of the eyes.
- Irregular sleeping schedule.
The symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) are as follows.
- The gain in weight.
- Hair fall.
- Low tolerance for cold temperatures.
- Absent or irregular menstrual cycle in women.
WHAT IS TSH USED FOR?
A thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test is used for analyzing the working and functioning of the thyroid.

WHAT DO THE TEST RESULTS MEAN?
Higher TSH level describes that the thyroid is not producing enough thyroid hormones and have a hypothyroidism condition. Similarly, low TSH level explains that the thyroid is producing too much thyroid hormones and a condition is known as hyperthyroidism. A TSH test only tells about the levels of the hormones, it does not elaborate why levels of the hormones are too increased or too decreased. If the results are not normal then the doctor may order other additional tests to evaluate the reason behind the increased and decreased levels of thyroid hormones. Additional tests are as follows.
- T4 thyroid hormone tests.
- T3 thyroid hormone tests.
- Tests to analyze Graves' disease.
- Tests to identify Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
