Alpha Fetoprotein also called AFP is a tumor marker test. It helps to detect and diagnose the presence of cancer in the liver, testicles, and ovaries in adults. It measures the level of Alpha-Fetoprotein in the blood
What is Alpha fetoprotein?
It is a protein made in the liver of a developing baby. AFP levels are usually higher when a baby is born, but fall to very low levels by the age of 1. Healthy adults should have very low levels of AFP. An AFP tumor marker test is a blood test that measures the levels of AFP in adults.
What is the Purpose of Test?
If you are pregnant the doctor will ask for an AFP test. It is considered a routine test, given to expectant mothers between the 14th and 22nd weeks of their pregnancy. Note: Error in determining the exact pregnancy stage can affect the test result, so, both you and your doctor must know your exact due date for accurate test results. Doctors will use your results, your age, and your ethnicity to help determine the chances that your unborn baby has a genetic birth defect like.
- neural tube defects, like spina bifida,Â
- Chromosomal abnormalities, like Down syndrome.
(A positive test doesn’t necessarily mean your unborn baby will have a birth defect.)
The AFP test is especially important for women who are at high risk of having children with birth defects, including women
- who are 35 or older
- with a family history of birth defects
- who used harmful medications or drugs during their pregnancies
- who have diabetes
If you are not Pregnant an AFP tumor marker test is conductedÂ
- for diagnosis or for ruling out the chances of liver cancer or cancer of the ovaries or testicles.
- for monitoring the progress of cancer treatment. AFP levels often go up if the cancer is spreading and go down when treatment is working.
- for checking if, cancer has returned after treatment or not.
- for monitoring the health of people with cirrhosis or hepatitis.
How the AFP tumor marker test is conducted?
A health care person will take a blood sample from a vein, using a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood will be collected in a test tube or vial. This usually takes less than five minutes.
Is there any prerequisite for the test?
No, there is no need for any fasting or any other preparation for the test.
How to interpret the test result?
AFP is measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). An AFP level between 10 ng/mL to 20 ng/mL is normal for adults. In the case of adults who aren't pregnant, if the results show that there is a high level of AFP, then it could be a sign that you have liver disease. The AFP levels fluctuate throughout pregnancy. In case of abnormal AFP level, you should consult your health professional immediately for accurate interpretation.
