WHAT IS BILIRUBIN DIRECT TEST?
The other name of this test is the Conjugated bilirubin test. The basic purpose to conduct this test is to look for the amount of bilirubin in your blood or urine. Bilirubin is a kind of fluid found in the bile that is produced when red blood cells are broken down in a human body. A small amount of bilirubin is quite good for the human body as it helps in the digestion of food.
In the liver, the bilirubin is transformed into a water-soluble form that a human body can’t get rid of. This is known as Conjugated bilirubin or direct bilirubin. This direct bilirubin goes through the liver and travels into the small intestine. A few ratios pass into the kidneys that are then excreted through the process of urination. So, this test is performed for the measurement of direct (conjugated) bilirubin in serum to observe the actual functioning of liver and bilirubin metabolism. Through these test conditions such as hepatitis, blockages, and gallstones can be identified.
SYMPTOMS
You are advised by your doctor that you may need a bilirubin direct test because your liver doesn’t seem to be functioning properly just as the way it should be or if any of the following symptoms shows up.
The symptoms are listed below.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Pain in belly or swelling.
- Dark or amber-colored urine.
- Jaundice (skin and white area of the eyes appear to be yellow).
- Fatigue or severe tiredness.
- Light gray or clay color of stool.
TEST SAMPLE?
The direct bilirubin test is done within 5 minutes with the easiest method of blood sample collection. A thin needle is injected into the vein of the arm and in this way the blood sample is collected in a small test tube. Other than this, the test can be performed on a urine sample as well and checked with a test strip.
TEST PREPARATION?
The blood or urine sample can be collected at any time therefore, no special preparation is needed.
WHAT DO THE TEST RESULTS MEAN?
The results of the bilirubin direct test depend on the age, gender, and overall health of a human being and it may change from person to person. In adults, the normal test result ranges from 0 to 0.2 mg/dL. Normally, the urine of a normal healthy human does not contain bilirubin. So, if the blood test results are higher it means there are chances that bilirubin may show up in urine.
Higher levels also shows that you have conditions like:
- Blood infection.
- Bile duct scarring.
- Certain cancers or tumors.
- Sickle cell anemia.
- Certain rare inherited diseases.
