What Is A CA-125 Blood Test?
Because high levels of CA-125 can be a sign of things other than ovarian cancer, this test is not used to check for the disease in women who are not at high risk. Most of the time, a CA-125 blood test is done on women who have already been told they have ovarian cancer. It can help determine if your cancer treatment is working or if your cancer has returned after you have finished treatment.
What's CA-125 Test Used For?
- Monitor ovarian cancer treatment. If the level of CA-125 goes down, this usually means that the treatment is working.
- Check to identify if cancer has returned after treatment was successful
- Check for ovarian cancer in women who are at high risk.
Why Do I Need To Get A CA-125 Blood Test?
If you are being treated for ovarian cancer, you may need a CA-125 blood test. Your doctor may test you at regular intervals to see if your treatment is working and after your treatment is done to see how well it worked.
You may also need a CA-125 test if you have a higher chance of getting ovarian cancer because of certain things. You might be more at risk if:
- Have a gene that makes it risky to get ovarian cancer. The names for these genes are BRCA 1 and BRCA 2.
- Someone in your family has ovarian cancer.
- Have had cancer in the uterus, the breast, or the colon in the past.
What Do The Results Suggest?
If you are getting treatment for ovarian cancer, you might be tested more than once. If tests show that your CA-125 levels have gone down, it usually means that the treatment is working. If your levels are high or stay the same, it may mean that the cancer is not responding to treatment.
If you have been treated for ovarian cancer and your CA-125 levels are still high, it could mean that the
cancer has returned.
High levels of CA-125 can be a sign of cancer if you are not being treated for ovarian cancer and your
test results show that you have it. But it could also be a sign of something other than cancer, like:
- Endometriosis, an illness in which tissue that normally grows inside the uterus grows outside of it. It can cause a lot of pain. It could also make it harder to have a baby.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease, or PID, is an infection of a woman’s reproductive organs. Usually, a sexually transmitted disease like gonorrhea or chlamydia is to blame.
- Uterine fibroids, which are benign uterine growths.
- Liver illness
- Pregnancy
- Menstruation, which happens at certain times in your cycle
