WHAT DOES A D-DIMMER TEST DO?

A D-Dimer test is a blood test that observes the presence of any blood clot. When a blood clot is dissolved in the body, a protein fragment is produced called the D-Dimer. A D-Dimer test is usually conducted to diagnose any blood clotting disorder which are:

  • DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT): In this condition, blood clots are present inside a vein. They are usually found in the legs, but they can also appear anywhere in the body.
  • PULMONARY EMBOLISM (PE): In this condition, there is a blockage of a vein in the lungs. Pulmonary Embolism happens when a blood clot from another part of the body travels to the lungs when it breaks out.

WHEN TO GET TESTED FOR D-DIMER TEST?

A D-Dimer test is conducted when there are symptoms of either Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or Pulmonary Embolism (PE) which are:

  • SYMPTOMS OF DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)
    • Edema – Leg swelling
    • Pain in legs (One leg usually)
    • Leg Discoloration –Red streaks or redness
  • SYMPTOMS OF PULMONARY EMBOLISM (PE)
    • Cough
    • Hemoptysis (blood in the sputum)
    • Sweating
    • Fast breathing
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest pain
    • Fainting

TEST PREPARATIONS AND SAMPLE COLLECTION

There is no specific test preparation required for a D-Dimer test. Furthermore, a blood sample is drawn from a vein in the arm to collect samples for a D-Dimer test. The sample collection for this test usually takes approximately 5 minutes. The drawn sample is sent to the laboratory for testing.

WHAT DO THE TEST RESULTS MEAN?

Normal or low levels of D-Dimer in the blood indicates that there is no blood clotting disorder in the body. However, higher levels of D-Dimer in the blood means there might be a clotting disorder. But this test does not show the location of the blood clot in the body.

Moreover, higher levels of D-Dimer levels does not always necessarily means there is a clotting disorder (like DVT or PE). There are other conditions that cause D-Dimer levels to rise such as Antiphospholipid syndrome (an immune system disease), heart disease, liver disease, pregnancy, or any recent major surgery (like knee replacement). Therefore, your doctor might ask you to take other tests as well when the results of D-Dimer test are high. To diagnose your condition better, other tests which your practitioner might order are:

  • CT angiography
  • Perfusion Scanning
  • Ultrasonography
  • Pulmonary angiography
