WHAT IS AN ESTROGEN LEVELS TEST?
An estrogen level test is conducted to analyze the estrogen levels in urine or blood. Estrogens are a collection of hormones that performs an important role in the growth of physical features of women such as reproductive functions, breast development, and menstrual cycle regulation. Both men and women produce estrogen hormones. In females, estrogens are produced in the ovaries. While in men, the hormones are made in testicles and adrenal glands. The three most common types of estrogen which are tested in the lab are:
- ESTRONE (E1): It is the major female hormone produced after menopause.
- ESTRADIOL (E2): It is also a main female hormone produced by non-pregnant females. Its level differs throughout menstruation in the blood.
- ESTRIOL (E3):It is a hormone that is analyzed only during the time of pregnancy.
WHEN TO GET TESTED FOR AN ESTROGEN LEVELS TEST?
An estrogen levels test is used to observe causes and reasons of infertility or late puberty in boys and girls, diagnose menopause and menstrual issues. An estrogen test also detect the tumors that produce estrogen. The test can be conducted when following symptoms occur:
SYMPTOMS IN WOMEN
- Hormone imbalance
- Vaginal bleeding after menopause
- Lack or abnormal menstrual cycle
- Early or late puberty
- Trouble in getting pregnant
SYMPTOMS IN MEN
- Late puberty
- Emergence of female characteristics (such as breast growth)
WHAT IS THE TEST PREPARATION AND SAMPLE COLLECTION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE TEST?
There is no specific test preparation prior to the test. Whereas, the sample for an estrogens level test is collected through, urine, blood, or saliva. For a urine estrogen test, a urine sample is collected within a 24 hour period. For a blood estrogen test, a blood sample is drawn from a vein (preferably vein in the arm). And, for a saliva test which can be conducted at home, your doctor would suggest a kit, and the preparation and sample collection.
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE TEST RESULTS?
The normal range of an estrogen level test is dependent upon the gender and age of the person. In women, the estrogen level range is also dependent upon their menstrual cycle and of their pregnant or not.
High levels of E1 and E2 indicate:
- Cirrhosis
- Hyperthyroidism
- Tumor in the testicles, ovaries or adrenal glands.
- Untimely puberty in girls
- Late puberty in boys
Low levels of E1 and E2 shows:
- Turner syndrome (underdeveloped sexual female characteristics)
- Ovarian failure
- Low level of pituitary hormones
High levels of E3 in women means that the labor time is going to happen soon. Whereas, low levels of E3 in women means failing pregnancy.
