WHAT IS A WIDAL TEST?
Widal test is a blood test, it is a process that helps in suspecting the Typhoid fever that is also known as enteric fever. Against the outer membrane protein (OMP) of the Salmonella typhi, the dot ELISA kit is responsible for detecting IgM and IgG antibodies. The typhoid fever is caused by the intake of food or water that is polluted with the feces of the human that is infected with the Salmonella typhi or S.Paratyphi. The Widal test shows the titers of specific antibodies so it is both qualitative as well as quantitative.
WHAT DOES WIDAL TEST LOOK FOR?
The Widal test is a test that is used to suspect, analyze, and screen the fever. It is also helpful in the detection of other infections like Salmonella infection. Antibodies like IgM and IgG can be identified against the infection if a Widal test is performed. After the time period of at least 7 days or more than 10 days of Typhoid fever, the result of the Widal test shows up as positive.
The Widal test can be shown as positive if in an active infection the ratio of TO antigen titer is greater than 1:160, or if in a past infection the ration of TH antigen titer is more than 1:160.
SYMPTOMS
The symptoms of Widal test are as follows:
- Headache.
- Cough.
- Rise in fever as high as 40 °C (104 °F).
- Gastroenteritis.
- Non-bloody diarrhea.
- Rash of flat, rose-colored spots.
- Intestinal hemorrhage in severe cases.
- Abnormal slow heartbeat than normal.
- Malaise.Â
- Excess in sweating.
- Spleen and liver enlargement.
- Distended abdomen.
SAMPLE COLLECTION
For the sample collection of the Widal test, the doctor first cleans the skin of the arm where the needle is going to be injected. Then a thin needle is inserted into the vein of the arm, a blood sample is then collected into a tube. A clean bandage is placed on the arm from where the blood sample is drawn.
